Topology is a branch of geometry that investigates shapes and structures. Topologists are interested in how shapes are connected together and how they are topologically similar.
A good example is the London Underground Map: the map cannot tell you exactly how far King’s Cross is from Piccadilly or even the compass direction from one to the other. But, it does give you topological information about the two stations – in other words how they are connected to each other.
