We’ve all watched Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, or Star Trek and heard the variety of exotic languages spoken by the elves, Hutts and Klingons. They might sound convincing but unlike languages like Spanish or Hindi that developed and grew naturally over centuries, these were created by people who call themselves conlinguist (‘con’ being the operative word). They create the exotic languages we hear in movies and video games, and read in books.
What do you need to become one? Conlinguists know how languages work on a primary level. Although they sometimes borrow from real languages, the most successful and convincing imaginary languages are constructed from the ground up.
