The word was first used in 1721 by a member of the Royal Society of London to refer to a volcano. Jules Verne (the writer of Around the World in 80 Days) was also a big fan of ‘ignivomous’ and used it in several of his translated works - including The Field of Ice in which it describes the volcano that the intrepid explorers of the story found, in defiance of known geography, at the North Pole.
The word comes from Latin ‘ignis’, meaning fire, plus ‘vomere’, to vomit.
